The meaning and themes of Advent
Advent is one of the most beautiful and reflective seasons in the Christian calendar. It marks the beginning of the church year and the four weeks leading up to the 12-day Christmas season. But more than just a countdown to presents and holiday meals, Advent invites us to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ.
The word “Advent” means “coming” or “arrival,” and during this season, we focus on two important truths: Christ’s first coming as a baby in Bethlehem and his promised return as King. It’s a time of both celebration and anticipation—a season of hope, peace, joy, and love.
Each week of Advent focuses on one of these themes:
- Hope reminds us of God’s promises and the assurance that Christ brings to a weary world.
- Peace points us to the peace Jesus offers, not as the world gives, but a deeper, lasting peace with God and one another.
- Joy reminds us of the great joy the angels declared to the shepherds on that holy night, a joy that is found in the presence of Jesus.
- Love highlights the depth of God’s love for us, shown through the gift of His Son.
Advent challenges us to pause in the busyness of life, to reflect, and to prepare. It is a time to rekindle our faith and to open our hearts to the gift of Christ, who meets us where we are and leads us to new life.
This Advent season, let’s walk together in hope, peace, joy, and love as we celebrate the coming of Emmanuel—God with us.
